WHY IS MATH "DIFFERENT" NOW?
Don't worry, this year your fifth-grader WILL learn the "old fashioned" methods of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. However, I will also expose them to some other methods for solving problems that may help them solve problems faster or find answers mentally. This video does a great job of explaining some of the more "modern" methods for teaching math. More importantly, it also helps parents understand WHY math is being taught in a variety of different ways. This is a valuable resource for helping your child with multiplication homework.
